Revision…what’s that?
How many times have you asked your child to revise for a test? When you send them off to revise – do you know what they are actually doing? A recent study of 12-year olds in the UK found that very few of them actually know what the word ‘revise’ means. One explanation given was that ‘revision is what the teacher tells you to do when they can’t think up any homework for you’! Worrying, isn’t it?
However, help is at hand because Brain Train can teach your child what revision actually means and how to revise effectively!
The Brain Train Study Skills course comprises of 5 one-hour sessions dedicated to helping children understand what revision actually means. Over many years of working with countless children, we have found the following key skills to be essential for effective study.
The ability to:
- Identify the main ideas in an area of study - in other words, 'what is this all about?'
- Identify essential points and key words relating to the main idea.
- Organize ideas in a way that you to understand them.
- Organize ideas in way that helps you to remember them.
- Draw on effective memory techniques to help you remember and recall specific facts and details.
- Assess your understanding to determine which topics have been learned and which require more time & effort
- Use the time effectively ensuring that when something is learned, it is stored in long-term memory.
Unfortunately, experience has also shown us that many children have not acquired these skills by the time they are expected to revise effectively for key exams. By enrolling your child in the Brain Train study skills course, you can be confident that he or she has the skills required to study effectively.
